Future Weapon Technology: Electromagnetic Railgun

If you are/were student of science  then you may know about electric current, magnetic field and most familiar physical quantity force, electromagnetic induction and way of inducing magnetic field with the help of  electric   current but have you ever thought is it possible to  make a gun by using the principle of electromagnetic induction, yes it's possible.

Electromagnetic rail guns launcher use magnetic field rather than chemical propellants (e.g - gun powder or fuel) to thrust a  projectile at long range at the velocities of 4,500 mph to 5,600 mph (7,200 km/h to 8,960 km/h).

As we know due to varying electric current a magnetic field is induced and a Lorentz force acts on armature (The yellow part in above image) and then the missile is projected towards the target.

Electromagnetic rail gun do not contain explosive but are given  extremely   high velocities 2,500 m/s or more (for comparison, THE M16 RIFLE  has a muzzle speed 930 m/s and AK 47 has a muzzle speed 730 m/s)

Rail gun deliver muzzle speed up to those conventional gun resulting in shorter time to target and higher lethality at greater range with no propellant required on board the platform. Rail gun offer deeper  magazine and lower cost per engagement compared with missiles of comparable range.

Engineers already have tested this futuristic weapons on land and navy plan to begin sea trials in 2016.
