Data Server Underwater: Project Natick(By Microsoft)

Project-Natick
Microsoft has started testing a new concept that is Project Natick, it aims to study the benefits and difficulties in deploying sub sea data centers worldwide. To study this they
made a sub sea data center and deployed it under the sea. The vessel in which servers were placed is named Leona Philpot. It was placed one kilometer off the pacific coast of United States from August 2015 to November 2015.

Why to put it underwater?

The data servers use a large amount of energy to operate, almost the total energy usage of data servers in US is nearly equal to 34 coal powered power plants, which is a massive amount of energy. Lot of energy goes to power the server and nearly half of the energy goes to keep them cool. By putting them under water the energy required to keep them cool will be saved which is a huge amount of energy. The other reason is that nearly 50% of the US population lives on the coast, so they will get easy access to internet.

When it will be available?

It is still a research and no claims have been made by the company that when it will be deployed.
